ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation will close and detour Highway 55 starting Monday, Sept. 28, as crews begin reconstructing the bridge over the North Fork Crow River in Paynesville.
First the old bridge will be removed, then the new structure will be built through winter and into early July 2027.
Here’s what to expect
- Highway 55 (Highway 4) will close between Business 23 West (West Mill Street) and the east junction of Stearns County Road 130.
- Southeast detour via eastbound Highway 23, Veterans Drive, Business 23 West and West Main Street.
- Northwest detour via West Main Street, Business 23 West, Veterans Drive and westbound Highway 23.
Pedestrians should use alternate routes. Please stay out of the closed area and follow posted detour signs for everyone’s safety.
Key highlights
The project will build a new, wider bridge with concrete approach panels, stormwater catch basins and guardrail; resurface Highway 55 east and west of the bridge; add new pavement markings; install a 10‑foot multi‑use trail along the north side; and add/update lighting to the bridge and trail.
Robert R. Schroeder Construction, Inc., is the prime contractor for the $4.2 million project, which will provide a long-lasting bridge, smoother pavement, better drainage and improved safety for motorists and pedestrians.
