Building Construction Permitting Overhaul (BETA)
Building upon the City’s Article 80 modernization work, we are launching a beta version of an overhauled permitting process for building construction. This initial launch focuses on projects between 20,000 to 50,000 sq. ft.
The new experience aims to increase transparency, simplify the permitting process, reduce approval times, and eliminate conflicting guidance from City departments.
What Applicants Should Expect
- Dedicated support from a single assigned City staffer, from project initiation through building permit
- Consolidated review periods
- Clear deadlines to make the process more predictable
Testing and Future Expansion
As with any beta launch, we know this first attempt will require edits and updates. We are prepared and excited to work together with applicants to fine-tune this process and help us achieve a seamless experience.
We plan to expand the changes to buildings 50,000 sqft and above in 2027.
About this Initiative
This work is part of a larger interdepartmental initiative with over 30 team members across the Mayor’s Office, the Department of Innovation and Technology, Planning, and Law. Over 200 stakeholders across the City have participated in bringing this effort to life.
Our goal is to transform permitting such that Bostonians can rely on a predictable, transparent, and efficient experience from the first moment they contact the City.
